I am working on a two page spread of an LDS magazine article, The Ensign. For my magazine spread story, I chose to write to an audience of young adults and teenagers who are struggling with feeling down and are looking for happiness.
Where Can I Find Happiness?
I think it’s safe to assume that we all have days where we feel down in the dumps and just want to stay in bed watching Netflix. How do we combat these days and find happiness?
There are many ways we can seek out happiness but I have come up with four ways to find happiness in my life and I would like to share them with you.
The first way I like to find happiness is to surround myself with those who make me smile and those who are generally happy people. Studies have shown that we are most happy when those who are also happy surround us. Our friends and family should uplift us. Those who do not uplift us, we should limit our association with them. Family offers love, support and understanding, which brings happiness into our lives.
Do something you love everyday. Each day I give myself anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to just spend focusing on my happiness and me. Some days it’s going out to lunch with friends, reading my scriptures, working out at the gym or simply taking a nap. This time everyday allows me to not think about daily tasks or stresses but just to relax and recharge to take on the rest of the day.
Have you made a mistake in our life? Maybe two? I’ve made hundreds of mistakes and I will continue to make them. An important aspect of finding happiness is through forgiving and accepting yourself as you are. Jesus Christ atoned for our sins so that we might have the opportunity to be forgiven and return to live with our Father in heaven. Once you realize that it is ok to make mistakes, that Christ offers us hope through the Atonement it is easier to forgive yourself and accept who are you. We cannot live in the past if we want to find happiness but rather look to the future and how we can improve today.
Pray is the number one way I find happiness in my life. I start everyday with a prayer and I ask my Heavenly Father to allow me happiness throughout my day. Heavenly Father can and will do anything to help us if we ask for his help through prayer. President Benson has urged: “If we would advance in holiness—increase in favor with God—nothing can take the place of prayer. … Give prayer—daily prayer, secret prayer—a foremost place in your lives. Let no day pass without it. Communion with the Almighty has been a source of strength, inspiration, and enlightenment through the world’s history to men and women who have shaped the destinies of individuals and nations for good.” Pray will lead you to happiness.
I hope these four suggestions lead you to happiness in your life.
