Magazine Spread

Message:

I am working on a two page spread for an LDS magazine article, The New Era. For my magazine spread story, I chose to write to an audience of young adults and teenagers who are struggling with feeling down and are looking for happiness.

My first step in this project was to draft up some layout ideas. I really liked the idea of having one big image featured on one side of the magazine pages.

Here is the final product! I flip flopped the sides on my draft and changed the image placement. Once I started working on it my perspective changed which led to the new layout. I want to spread happiness and hope this spread shows that. I loved the image of the couple on that right that I found online and think it depicts happiness well. This project was easier than expected. I placed the background image across both pages of the spread because I loved the image so much. I then created a text box with two columns to display the article I wrote. I inserted two other images that represent happiness below the columns. I then focused on making a big title, I placed the four in it’s on text box so I could make it stand out larger.

Critiques:

In my first draft the smaller images we stacked and against the page. Emma suggest I move them away from the page so I did that and put them side by side as well. However, I still kept them along the against the page, just on the bottom instead of the side because visually I felt it looked best.

Addyson offered the same suggestion and also offered that I should change my body copy font. I changed the font to a sans serif so it was easier to read. I love the simplicity the new font I chose offers and think it was a great suggestion from Addyson.

Photographic Study

Cisco Phone Shoot

This was an interesting project. I’ve never considered myself to be good at photography so just taking the pictures was a task for me. I wanted to photograph an object with texture so I chose the phone in my office because it has many buttons and numbers. I shot all different angles of the phone and even captured the dust that was on the phone in some photos.

Critiques:

Cheryl suggested my collage be less busy. I previously had nine photos in my collage and changed it to just six.

Paul suggested that I change the title. In my first draft my title read, “Office Phone.” For the final draft I changed it to Cisco Phone.

Social Media Marketing

Company: Sephora Beauty

Objective: Create awareness for the new Kylie Jenner Lip Kit that will be launching at the Sephora Beauty stores and on their website.

Strategy: Create a series of five Instagram posts that builds excitement for the release of the new product in stores.

Sephora is a brand that always has the latest and greatest cosmetic brands. Ever since Kylie Jenner launched her they have been selling out within minutes of going live. Because these lip kits are so popular they would fit perfectly in with the Sephora brand.

Instagram is a great platform to advertise this product because young adults and teens are the main audience on the platform and that is who has been buying the lip kits.

Process:

I researched the language that Sephora typically uses in their Instagram posts and tried to copycat that language in my posts. They often use emoji’s and a few hashtags with each post that relate to the product so that is what I portrayed in my posts. I created a fake instagram account to post the images on and I actually got a few followers after posting! Unfortunately, Sephora won’t be getting these lip kits anytime soon but a girl can dream.

Critiques:

I received the critiques from Emma to make a fake profile for the project instead of my own, so I went ahead and made the unofficial Sephora account.

Shelley pointed out that I needed more hashtags so I added a few more to each photo. Sephora does not typically use more than three hashtags so I did not want to stray from the brand and add too many.

Magazine Spread

Message:

I am working on a two page spread of an LDS magazine article, The Ensign. For my magazine spread story, I chose to write to an audience of young adults and teenagers who are struggling with feeling down and are looking for happiness.

Where Can I Find Happiness?

I think it’s safe to assume that we all have days where we feel down in the dumps and just want to stay in bed watching Netflix. How do we combat these days and find happiness?

There are many ways we can seek out happiness but I have come up with four ways to find happiness in my life and I would like to share them with you.

The first way I like to find happiness is to surround myself with those who make me smile and those who are generally happy people. Studies have shown that we are most happy when those who are also happy surround us. Our friends and family should uplift us. Those who do not uplift us, we should limit our association with them. Family offers love, support and understanding, which brings happiness into our lives.

Do something you love everyday. Each day I give myself anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to just spend focusing on my happiness and me. Some days it’s going out to lunch with friends, reading my scriptures, working out at the gym or simply taking a nap. This time everyday allows me to not think about daily tasks or stresses but just to relax and recharge to take on the rest of the day.

Have you made a mistake in our life? Maybe two? I’ve made hundreds of mistakes and I will continue to make them. An important aspect of finding happiness is through forgiving and accepting yourself as you are. Jesus Christ atoned for our sins so that we might have the opportunity to be forgiven and return to live with our Father in heaven. Once you realize that it is ok to make mistakes, that Christ offers us hope through the Atonement it is easier to forgive yourself and accept who are you. We cannot live in the past if we want to find happiness but rather look to the future and how we can improve today.

Pray is the number one way I find happiness in my life. I start everyday with a prayer and I ask my Heavenly Father to allow me happiness throughout my day. Heavenly Father can and will do anything to help us if we ask for his help through prayer. President Benson has urged: “If we would advance in holiness—increase in favor with God—nothing can take the place of prayer. … Give prayer—daily prayer, secret prayer—a foremost place in your lives. Let no day pass without it. Communion with the Almighty has been a source of strength, inspiration, and enlightenment through the world’s history to men and women who have shaped the destinies of individuals and nations for good.” Pray will lead you to happiness.

I hope these four suggestions lead you to happiness in your life.

Slide Design

Speaker’s Outline:

I have a love for reading that I want to encourage others to develop.

Reading offers so much more than just allowing us to read information on a page.

Reading reduces stress. All stress can slip away when you find yourself lost in a great story.

Reading expands your vocabulary. The more you read, the more words you are exposed too and they eventually make it into your everyday vocabulary.

Reading allows you to gain knowledge. Especially when reading about historical events and biographies.

Exposure to good writing increases your own personal skills.

When reading books you have to remember the story line, characters and sub-plots. This memorization can carry over into your daily life outside of books.

Reading requires 100% concentration to understand the story. Reading for 15-20 minutes before work can improve your work day focus.

Summary:

Reading improves multiple aspects of our lives.

Process:

I have a love for reading that I want to encourage others to develop which inspired this slideshow. I searched for an article that explains the benefits of reading. Reading does more than just allow us to read information and that is what I wanted to explain in this presentation.

Audience:

My target audience for this is young adults. I tried to choose visually appealing photos that would attract the eye and simple text that could be read and understood easily.

Sketches:

Critiques:

Emma and Sharon both suggested that I make my fonts more bold and make my overall design standout more.

My original designed featured a title in the top left corner with a line underneath and an image below the line.

To make my design more bold I stretched the image over the whole slide, changed the color of the line and text and placed the titles it different areas with the repeating line in each slide.

Event Flier

Message: I created this flier for a nonprofit organization that I am affiliated with in Idaho Falls. Shepherds Inn is a pregnancy center that offers free counseling to expecting mothers. In order to remain free the center needs donations and Idaho Gives is an opportunity for them to raise money for their organization.

Audience: Middle aged adults in the state of Idaho who participate in Idaho Gives and would donate to Shepherds Inn specifically.

Colors: I wanted to stick with the natural blue and green colors that can be found throughout the state of Idaho, (aside from winter time.)

Critiques Given:

Shelley suggested I add a transparent background to make the font easier to read so I added a white layer to the photo that I made transparent so it was easier to read the font.

Elise suggested the sponsor logos were too large so I made them smaller on my design.

Tasteful Typography

Audience: For this design I wanted to focus on millennials. As a millennial, I think we often get stuck thinking who we see on the internet is perfect and our life cannot compare to that of the bloggers or Instagrammers. If we don’t have as many followers as them or comments on our blog we feel insignificant. We need to step back and change our perspective.

Critiques: Judy Daines suggested (Tuesday at 2:45 pm) I should crop out the left side of my image. I felt that would limit the “perspective” of the picture and did not crop the image but I did shift the image over.

Dee Whitman offered (Tuesday at 2:30 pm) that “Sis Larson makes note of the .5 distance around your text. Move you title and body copy to the left away from the right margin.” I went ahead and moved my copy away from the margin by a half an inch to follow instruction.
